The Dark Room Cinema

Designed to make the outside world disappear, this dedicated home cinema combines a traditional dark-room cinema aesthetic with a powerful 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos experience.

Introduction

This dedicated home cinema was designed around one clear ambition: to recreate the scale, atmosphere and impact of a commercial cinema within a private residential environment. Working alongside Modco Interiors, Planetworld helped bring the room to life through a carefully considered combination of high-performance audiovisual technology, acoustic treatment and interior design. Every element, from the Klipsch THX Ultra Dolby Atmos system and large-format projection to the dark architectural finishes and fibre-optic star-light ceiling, was considered as part of one complete experience. The result is an immersive cinema where technology and design work together seamlessly, creating a space that looks, sounds and feels every bit as impressive as the films it was built to showcase.

Challenge

The room presented several construction and acoustic challenges, with windows along the left wall and additional windows behind the screen. The space was constructed using drywall and acoustically treated to manage the room's sound. A combination of absorption, reflection and diffusion was incorporated to help control the acoustic environment and create a balanced listening experience. The challenge was not simply to control the acoustics, but to do so while creating the dark, immersive atmosphere that defined the room's overall design.

Solution

At the heart of the cinema is a Klipsch THX Ultra 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos system, carefully integrated into the room to deliver the scale and impact of a commercial cinema while maintaining a refined finish. The front stage uses Klipsch THX-6000-LCR speakers, with THX-5000-SUR speakers providing the surround channels. THX-5002-L in-wall speakers and a THX-1200-SW passive subwoofer complete the system. An Integra DRX-8.4 AV receiver provides the processing for the system, while an Epson LS9000 projects onto the large 158" Adeo AT screen. Modco's interior work completes the experience, incorporating the room's architectural finishes, acoustic elements, integrated lighting and distinctive fibre-optic star-light ceiling. The result is a space designed not only to sound like a cinema, but to feel like one.

Experience

Everything about the room was designed to immerse you. The dark interior removes distractions, the star-lit ceiling creates atmosphere and the 158" screen fills your field of view. Combined with the power and precision of the Klipsch THX Ultra system, the result is a cinema that feels much larger than a typical home entertainment space. The partnership between Planetworld and Modco Interiors demonstrates what is possible when technology and interior design are considered together from the beginning. Rather than adding AV equipment to an existing room, the entire environment was developed around the cinema experience. Feedback from those who have experienced the room has been consistently positive, with the dark cinema aesthetic and star-light ceiling being highlights.
