Project Brief

About This Installation

Imative and Planetworld bring clarity, coverage and impact to Kerksondermure with JBL Professional.

Challenge

A space designed to bring people together. An auditorium that demanded a different approach to sound.

At Kerksondermure, music and the spoken word are central to the Sunday experience. With more than 1,000 seats spread across a wide 160-degree auditorium with a 1.2m rake, ensuring that every person could clearly hear and engage with what was happening on stage presented a significant audio challenge. The room's complex acoustics required precise loudspeaker placement and carefully considered coverage. Adding to the challenge, limited rigging positions within the existing roof structure restricted where the system could physically be positioned. For trusted Planetworld integration partner Imative, the objective was clear: create an audio system that could work with the architecture of the auditorium while delivering clarity, consistency and impact to every part of the congregation.

Solution

Engineering the right solution for the room.

Rather than allowing the existing infrastructure to dictate the performance of the system, the team addressed the structural challenge first. An 8 x 3m rectangular truss structure was installed, creating the rigging positions needed to place the audio system where it could perform at its best. The new structure also introduced additional rigging capabilities for the venue's lighting equipment, adding flexibility beyond the immediate audio requirement. At the heart of the solution is the JBL Professional SRX900 Series. A JBL SRX906LA line array system was deployed in an LCR configuration to provide controlled, consistent coverage across the auditorium's unusually wide footprint. Four JBL SRX918S subwoofers add the low-frequency performance required to give live worship music the energy and impact it deserves. The system is managed through the JBL Performance application, providing an integrated platform for system configuration and management. Designed by Travis Vermeulen and installed by Imative in October 2023, the final solution was built specifically around the requirements of Kerksondermure and its auditorium.

Benefit

From the message to the music, every moment can reach the room.

The completed system delivers clear, powerful and consistent audio throughout the auditorium. Spoken word benefits from the intelligibility needed to communicate a message clearly, while live worship has the scale, energy and low-frequency impact required to fill the space without sacrificing definition. For Kerksondermure, that means technology can do what it should do: support the experience rather than distract from it. The new truss infrastructure has also created greater flexibility for lighting and future technical requirements, giving the venue a stronger foundation from which its production capabilities can continue to develop. Most importantly, whether seated at the front, side or further back in the auditorium, the congregation can remain connected to what is happening on stage. Because when the message matters, every word should be heard.

Story

Sound with a purpose.

Kerksondermure is an Afrikaans-speaking faith community with campuses in Centurion and Midstream, built around creating spaces where people can connect, grow and experience faith together. At its Centurion campus, Sunday services bring together inspiring music, practical biblical messages and a multi-generational congregation. In an environment like this, audio isn't simply part of the technical specification. It plays an important role in how people experience the service. The auditorium, however, presented an interesting challenge. Accommodating just over 1,000 people across a 160-degree seating spread and 1.2m rake, the architecture required a sound system capable of delivering consistent coverage across a particularly wide listening area. There was also a physical constraint. Limited rigging positions within the existing roof structure meant that simply selecting the right loudspeakers wasn't enough. They needed to be positioned correctly to perform as intended. This is where Imative's integration expertise became critical. Working with a system design by Travis Vermeulen, the team introduced an 8 x 3m rectangular truss structure to create the necessary rigging positions. In doing so, they solved the immediate audio challenge while giving Kerksondermure additional infrastructure for lighting. The JBL Professional SRX900 Series then provided the audio platform. SRX906LA line arrays configured in LCR deliver coverage across the auditorium, while four SRX918S subwoofers provide the low-frequency foundation for live worship and musical performances. System management through the JBL Performance application completes a solution designed to combine performance with practical day-to-day operation. The result demonstrates what happens when the venue, integrator and technology are considered as one complete system. For Imative, it meant delivering a solution shaped around the unique requirements of its client. For Kerksondermure, it created an auditorium where technology supports both the energy of worship and the clarity of the spoken message. And for Planetworld, it represents exactly what strong distribution partnerships should look like: equipping trusted integrators with world-class technology and technical expertise to deliver solutions that make a meaningful difference.

Project Partner

KERKSONDERMURE Kerksondermure is an Afrikaans-speaking faith community with campuses in Centurion and Midstream. The church describes its vision as creating a community where people can feel at home, encounter Jesus and discover what it calls the “Jesuslewe.” Its Sunday services combine inspiring music, practical biblical messages and environments designed for every generation. The Centurion auditorium accommodates just over 1,000 people and serves as an important gathering space for worship, teaching and community. IMATIVE Imative is a trusted Planetworld integration partner specialising in audio-visual solutions designed around the specific requirements of each environment. Its approach to AV system design focuses on understanding what a space and its users need before developing the technology solution – an approach that proved particularly important at Kerksondermure, where architecture, acoustics and infrastructure all needed to be considered together. For this project, Imative was responsible for implementing the audio solution and supporting rigging infrastructure, turning the system design into a complete solution for the Kerksondermure auditorium.
