When Technology Gives Everyone a Voice
Auditoriums have always been places where knowledge is shared, ideas are challenged and conversations create opportunities for learning.
But as academic events become increasingly interactive and hybrid participation becomes more common, the technology supporting these spaces needs to do more than amplify a speaker at the front of the room.
At the Central University of Technology's Japie van Lill Auditorium, the objective was to create an environment where communication could flow naturally between presenters, audiences and remote participants.
The venue hosts a range of academic and institutional activities, from formal presentations and conferences to collaborative discussions.
Each places different demands on the audiovisual system.
A presenter needs to be heard clearly. Audience members need to contribute without interrupting the flow of discussion. Remote participants need to see and hear the people speaking.
To bring these requirements together, Ventronics worked with Planetworld to implement an integrated Q-SYS and Shure solution.
The system is built around a Q-SYS Core Nano, with four Shure MXA920 ceiling array microphones and 22 Q-SYS NL-C4 networked loudspeakers supporting voice lift throughout the auditorium.
Rather than relying on handheld microphones for audience interaction, the system is designed to capture and reinforce speech naturally.
But the installation goes beyond audio.
Four Q-SYS NC-12x80 PTZ cameras are integrated through custom control logic that responds to Shure microphone activity.
When a presenter speaks at the podium or an audience member contributes to the discussion, the system can automatically adjust camera coverage to capture the active speaker.
This helps create a more engaging experience for remote participants while reducing the manual workload associated with camera operation.
Control has also been designed around the different people using the venue.
A Q-SYS TSC-101-G3 touchscreen at the podium provides presenters with a dedicated interface, while a TSC-50-G3 touchscreen allows technical staff to manage system functions from the back-of-house position.
The inclusion of Shure ANI audio interfaces further supports external broadcast requirements, making the auditorium suitable for a broader range of academic and institutional productions.
By bringing intelligent audio, automated visuals and integrated control together, the installation creates an environment that adapts to the conversation.
For CUT, the result is more than an upgraded auditorium.
It is a connected space designed to encourage participation, support knowledge sharing and bring audiences together, whether they are seated in the room or joining remotely.
Because when every voice can be heard, every conversation has greater potential.
The Japie van Lill Auditorium installation demonstrates how intelligent audiovisual integration can transform traditional presentation spaces into more interactive and connected environments.
Through Ventronics' integration of Q-SYS processing, networked loudspeakers and automated camera tracking with Shure ceiling array microphone technology, the auditorium supports natural audience participation and more engaging hybrid communication.
Dedicated control interfaces and broadcast connectivity further extend the system's flexibility, allowing the venue to accommodate a wide range of academic, institutional and professional events.
The result is an intelligent auditorium environment where every voice matters, every perspective can be seen and technology brings people closer to the conversation.
