Project

A Winning Display at Sportsmans Warehouse

A new perspective on in-store digital displays.

Project Brief

A New Vision for the Retail Experience

Sportsmans Warehouse set out to upgrade its in-store digital display at Mall of Africa, replacing an existing LCD screen with a modern indoor LED solution. Working with DMX Africa, Planetworld delivered a custom Leyard LED installation designed to fit the existing retail environment. With structural limitations, differing display dimensions and new connectivity requirements to consider, the project called for more than a simple screen replacement. It required a carefully engineered solution that balanced visual impact, installation safety and the store's existing design.

Challenge

When the Wall Becomes the Challenge

Replacing an LCD display with LED technology might sound straightforward, but the existing installation space presented several obstacles. During the site assessment, it became clear that the original drywall could not safely support the proposed LED system. A reinforced mounting solution was required, along with a custom frame that would accommodate the new display while complementing the store's industrial aesthetic. The new LED display also introduced different resolution and aspect ratio requirements, demanding careful planning to ensure the screen fitted the available space. With no existing communication cables suitable for reuse, controller placement and new connectivity infrastructure also needed to be considered. The challenge was to bring modern LED technology into an established retail environment without compromising structural safety, visual integration or installation quality.

Solution

Engineered to Fit. Designed to Perform.

The solution centred on a Leyard LUS0250-GOB indoor LED display, configured in a 7 × 8 modular layout. To accommodate the new technology, a custom mounting frame and trim package were developed, with the supporting wall reinforced by the responsible construction team before installation. The system incorporates: 56 × Leyard LUS0250-GOB modules: Creating the new indoor LED display. 1 × NovaStar MCTRL300: Providing LED display control. 10 × Leyard LYD-N7512 receiving cards: Supporting signal distribution within the display. 10 × 200 W power supplies: Providing power to the LED system. Custom mounting and trim: Supporting accurate installation and integration with the store's interior. With existing communication cabling unavailable, the NovaStar controller was positioned adjacent to the display to support the required connectivity. The installation brought together structural preparation, LED mounting, power and data integration, configuration and commissioning to deliver a solution tailored to the site.

Benefit

A Brighter Future for In-Store Communication

The completed installation replaces the previous LCD display with a modern LED platform designed for retail content. The modular Leyard system provides a new digital canvas for product messaging, promotions and branded visuals, while the custom mounting solution integrates the display into the store's existing environment. More importantly, the project demonstrates how careful engineering and technical coordination can overcome installation challenges without compromising the final result. Completed and handed over on 21 July 2026, the installation received positive feedback from both Sportsmans Warehouse and DMX Africa. A smarter display solution, built around the space it occupies.

Story

More Than a Screen Replacement

In retail, visual communication plays an important role in connecting customers with products, promotions and brands. At Sportsmans Warehouse in Mall of Africa, the opportunity was to move beyond an existing LCD display and introduce a modern LED solution. But as the project progressed, it became clear that the upgrade would involve far more than replacing one screen with another. The original mounting surface was not suitable for supporting the new LED system, introducing a structural challenge that needed to be resolved before installation could begin. Rather than compromising the installation, the project team developed an alternative approach. The supporting wall was reinforced by the responsible construction parties, while a custom mounting frame and trim package were incorporated into the LED installation. The solution also needed to account for the new display's dimensions, resolution and connectivity requirements. A Leyard LUS0250-GOB modular LED system was selected, configured in a 7 × 8 layout and supported by NovaStar processing technology. With no suitable communication cabling available for reuse, the NovaStar MCTRL300 controller was positioned adjacent to the display, allowing the required connectivity to be established. Throughout the project, Planetworld worked with DMX Africa and the relevant installation stakeholders to coordinate the technical requirements, equipment supply, installation and commissioning. The installation was completed and formally handed over on 21 July 2026, with both Sportsmans Warehouse and DMX Africa expressing satisfaction with the completed work. What began as a challenging installation environment became a successfully integrated digital display. The project is a reminder that exceptional AV installations are not simply about the technology on display. They're about finding the right solution for the space, the application and the people who use it.
