Music is in our blood
Before the Planetworld vinyl began spinning, musicians like Lionel Richie, Simon and Garfunkel and Frank Sinatra set the rhythm for the Van Heerden Family, whose love affair with music started the Planetworld story. Little do they know then that music would build the foundation of the vision for their business, and remain central to everything Planetworld would do today.
A star is born
In 2008 the four Van Heerden brothers acquired Planet Electronics – a small importer and distributor of aftermarket accessories to the automotive trade. Over the course of three years, the brothers’ introduction of infotainment systems to the offering and creation of Caska, which grew to become one of the largest infotainment brands in the country, set the groundwork for the future of Planetworld.
Planetworld would later secure the distribution rights to Kicker Car Audio, which grew over two years into the largest premium car audio brand in South Africa. Over the next seven years, Planet Electronics also secured the distribution rights to several other leading car audio brands, including JVC, Alpine, Kenwood and Focal. Planetworld now sells car audio products in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mauritius.
In 2017 Planetworld expanded their offering and embarked into new audio markets and industries, acquiring Audiotronic — a 40-year-old distributor of home audio brands including Onkyo, Sonos, Polk Audio and Dali. Since then several acquisitions have expanded the Planetworld offering into home automation, and more exciting areas of innovation that keep the Planetworld record spinning.
In 2022 Planetworld opened their new Viewing Rooms space in Sandton, Johannesburg, and expanded their acquisitions program, venturing further into new territories where automation, sound and home decor come together in a single space.
